Riquelme out for remainder of Argentine season
Boca Juniors playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme will miss the remaining four games of the Argentina Apertura season with a foot injury.
The club said Wednesday on its website that Riquelme had Achilles tendinitis in his right foot, which would require rest. Boca has 20 points and is far off the lead in the Apertura tournament. The Clausura season opens in January.
Riquelme underwent surgery on his left knee in May and has played only two matches since then. He played 90 minutes against Argentinos Juniors, but lasted only 45 minutes in last week's match against River Plate before limping off with the foot injury.
The former Barcelona star signed a four-year contract earlier this season with Boca, but the 32-year-old's future is clouded by the recurring injuries. His absence has left Boca sputtering and probably contributed to the departure of coach Claudio Borgi, who resigned last week.
''In the game against River Plate, he (Riquelme) could barely complete the first 45 minutes,'' Boca said in a statement.
The club said it hoped Riquelme would be available for the first game of the Clausura season against Godoy Cruz.
