Red Star Belgrade has appointed Aleksandar Jankovic as its new coach, one day after former Croatia international Robert Prosinecki resigned from the post.

The 40-year-old Jankovic previously briefly coached Red Star in 2008 and also took charge of SC Lokeren in 2009 in the Belgian league. He is currently coaching Serbia's under-21 team.

Prosinecki resigned Monday after Red Star drew 2-2 draw against 10-men Rad Belgrade in the opening match of the Serbian league a day earlier.

Prosinecki played for Red Star when the Serbian club won the 1991 European Cup. He later joined Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla and Portsmouth before returning to Croatia to become an assistant coach of the national team.
