The New York Red Bulls have released defender Rafa Marquez.
The team made the announcement on Thursday, calling it a mutual agreement with Marquez, the Mexico captain at his third World Cup in 2010.
Marquez signed with New York in August 2010 as a designated player from Barcelona, where he enjoyed a trophy-laden career.
He started 42 of 44 regular-season games for New York and had one goal.
Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh called Marquez ''a top quality player.''
