PSG defender Serge Aurier sentenced to two months in prison

Paris Saint-Germain full back Serge Aurier has been handed a suspended two-month jail sentence on Monday for allegedly elbowing a police officer in the throat outside a Paris nightclub on May 30.

The Cote d’Ivoire international was also fined €600,000 in damages over the incident, which occurred after Aurier was asked by police to take a breathalyzer as he tried to get into his car. Aurier denied the charges, instead claiming he had been a victim of police brutality.

Aurier has already appealed against the ruling, and the "converted" sentence means he is unlikely to end up facing jail time, according to RMC Sports. Despite the sentencing, Aurier remains free to suit up for PSG and is expected to play in Wednesday’s Champions League match at Ludogorets.

"Because of his appeal, PSG still presume the player innocent as the case is still ongoing," the club said in a statement posted to their website. "Aurier can continue to play and do his job in France and abroad."

This is just the latest in a long list of controversies involving Aurier. In February, PSG suspended the 21-year-old for six weeks after a video emerged on social media showing Aurier using homophobic language to criticize then-manager Laurent Blanc. Last season, UEFA banned Aurier for three games after posting another video on social media in which he bashed referee Bjorn Kuipers.

Aurier has also been convicted four separate times for driving without a license, the last coming on May 23, a week before the alleged assault against the police officer.
