Prem is the priority - Lampard
Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard claims the club's top priority is
to regain the Premier League title this season.
Chelsea secured back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 but were
dislodged at the summit by Manchester United, who have since gone
on to secure three crowns on the spin.
The Blues currently lead the Red Devils by a point in this
season's title race - with the benefit of a game in hand - and both
teams are in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League with
last-16 clashes against Italian duo Inter Milan and AC Milan
respectively.
It has been widely suggested that boss Carlo Ancelotti is
gunning for Chelsea's maiden European crown, which is the only top
club honour that eludes Lampard and his team-mates, but the
31-year-old midfielder insists the league is the club's No.1
target.
"The Champions League is definitely something I want to win
at least once in my career but, for me, the league is where we need
to get to the consistency levels we had a few years ago," the
goalscoring midfielder told The Daily Star Sunday
"We were dominant for two years but Manchester United have
been playing fantastically for three years. There's a feeling among
the players that we want to go one step further and get consistency
back in the league and then push on for the Champions League.
"It's a lovely feeling to be the best team in your country -
and I want to get that back."
Lampard hopes he take club success into the England set-up
with the World Cup in South Africa on the horizon this summer and
the Three Lions midfielder reckons this could be his most important
season to date.
"Potentially, this could be the biggest year of my career,"
he added. "It is a big season at club level - as they all are now.
And it's a big season with the World Cup at the end of it - and
that's the biggest tournament out there. England are going pretty
well and we've given ourselves a great chance.
"For me to be involved in that personally and be successful,
I'd have to look back and say it was one of my best seasons. I
certainly hope to be doing that."
