Almani Moreira scored in the sixth minute for Partizan to beat Red Star Belgrade 1-0 on Saturday in a derby match besieged by police fearing violence between the two bitter rivals' fans.

Some 5,000 riot policemen were deployed throughout Belgrade to prevent a repeat of the Oct. 10 street riots when around 150 people were injured during clashes between police and far-right supporters who tried to disrupt a gay pride march in the capital.

Two days later, Serbian fans rioted in Italy during a European Championship qualifying match, causing it to be called off after seven minutes.

Anticipating more clashes during the derby, Serbian lawmakers urgently amended the criminal law Friday to pave the way for tougher penalties against far-right hooligan violence.

There was no major violence Saturday before or during the match at the Red Star stadium attended by some 30,000 fans.

Partizan and Red Star are now tied at the top of the league table with 22 points each.
