Peru striker Pizarro confirms Bremen departure
Peru striker Claudio Pizarro will leave Werder Bremen after four seasons in his second spell at the Bundesliga club.
Pizarro informed club management on Tuesday of his desire to leave, Werder said in a statement.
''We convinced him three times (to stay) with Werder. Unfortunately a fourth time wasn't possible,'' Bremen general manager Klaus Allofs said. ''We regret it very much but are happy a decision has finally been made.''
Pizarro, the top-scoring foreign player in Bundesliga history with 160 goals, scored 60 and set up another 20 in 103 league appearances since his return to Bremen in 2008.
Altogether he scored 89 times for Bremen, leaving him fourth on the club's all-time scoring list.
''It was a very difficult decision for me, because I love the team and this club,'' Pizarro said. ''But toward the end of my career I'd like to do something different. I can't yet say what that will be, but I have some offers which I'm still considering.''
German media reports suggest Bundesliga rivals Schalke and Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing the 33-year-old.
