Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne is recovering in hospital from a car accident.

Gascoigne was in a ``serious but not life-threatening'' condition in Newcastle General Hospital, Northumbria police said Monday.

The former player was one of three people in a Vauxhall Astra that crashed at Sandhill on Newcastle's quayside on Sunday night.

``For reasons yet to be established, the car left the road and collided with a lamppost,'' police said.

Another man was also being treated for injuries. The third person in the car, a 36-year-old woman, was discharged from the hospital and arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

The 1990 World Cup star was ``comfortable'' according to a statement from Newcastle General Hospital.

Gascoigne scored 10 goals in 57 matches for England. He played for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers and Middlesbrough before his career was cut short by injuries and off-field troubles.

In March, the 43-year-old Gascoigne was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and without insurance. The case was adjourned until July.
