Veteran striker Martin Palermo scored his 300th goal in the first division of Argentine football Monday, but it was only enough to give Boca Juniors a 1-1 draw with Gimnasia and wrap up another sub-par season for one of the country's most popular clubs.
The largely meaningless match was played a day after Estudiantes won the Apertura title, defeating Arsenal 2-0. Estudiantes finished with 45 points from 19 matches. Second-place Velez, which defeated Racing 2-0 on Sunday, ended with 43 points. Boca had 25 points.
After scoring the goal, Palermo pulled off his Boca shirt, showing off a T-shirt that had "300" written on it.
In two other matches Monday, River Plate defeated Lanus 4-1 and
finished clear of the relegation zone. Huracan defeated
Independiente 1-0.
