Nugent hopes Pompey beat drop

Nugent has moved back and forth between Pompey and Burnley over the last fortnight in a bid to extend his loan at Turf Moor to the end of the season. A deal was finally tied up on transfer deadline day, but the striker spent a couple of days training with his parent club, whose financial crisis took a new twist today with the news that Hong Kong businessman Balram Chainrai has become their fourth owner in six months. As well as having his move upheld, Nugent has been affected by the delay to Portsmouth players' wages this season having still been a part of the payroll at Fratton Park. But the striker has no ill-feeling towards the south coast outfit and having witnessed the camaraderie still in the camp, hopes Avram Grant's side can pull themselves out of trouble. Asked if he felt he was leaving a sinking ship, Nugent said: "Yes, I could well be. "Nobody knows what's going on at the football club and I feel sorry for the staff and players. "If they aren't getting paid, then hopefully the new owner that is coming in can sort it all out and steady the ship. "I've not been getting paid either - Burnley pay Portsmouth and then Portsmouth pay me, so I'm in the boat with them really. "It's hard for them and the results show that. But I went training with them and the spirits are all right, the lads are up for it and they are trying to do their best for Portsmouth. "I do hope they get out of the relegation zone because I have a lot of time for Portsmouth and the fans, so hopefully it will get sorted. "I would love for both of them to stay up, but I'm at Burnley now so first and foremost it's Burnley." Nugent has made his desire to stay at Turf Moor clear from the moment he first joined Burnley in September, and the 24-year-old confirmed he will be looking to make his deal permanent if the Clarets retain their Barclays Premier League status this season. "I'm trying to keep myself in the shop window - I'm only on loan and I think I'll be leaving Portsmouth in the summer," he said. "If Burnley stay up then I'll be looking to stay."
