Ryan Taylor's second-half free kick gave Newcastle a 1-0 win over fierce local rival Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.

Taylor's inswinging delivery from the left evaded everyone in the box, sailing over Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet's outstretched arm and into the top corner in the 62nd minute.

Newcastle felt it should have been ahead already after Sebastian Larsson used his arm to keep out Joey Barton's goal-bound header in the first half, but referee Howard Webb gave a corner.

Sunderland had defender Phil Bardsley sent off late on after receiving a second yellow card for a two-footed tackle on Fabricio Coloccini.
