Former Marseille manager Eric Gerets will be the new coach of Morocco's national team, the country's football federation said on Monday.

Gerets, who will replace Hassan Moumen, will take up the post as soon as the Belgian's commitments with Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal come to an end - in November at the latest.

His assistant will be Dominique Cuperly, who had the same job during Gerets' spell in charge at Marseille from 2007-09. Cuperly will initially take charge of the Morocco squad, pending the 56-year-old Gerets' arrival from Saudi Arabia, the federation said in statement.

In his coaching career to date, Gerets has won the Belgian league with Lierse and Club Brugge, two Dutch league titles with PSV Eindhoven, the Turkish league with Galatasaray and the Saudi championship with Al Hilal earlier this year.

The Moroccan federation is keen to revitalize the national team after it failed to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa or the African Cup of Nations in Angola.

Gerets' arrival is part of a wide-ranging move to improve the game in Morocco, and follows the appointment of former South Korea and Australia coach Pim Verbeek to manage youth development.
