McCarthy expects backlash
McCarthy's Wolves side will take on United at Old Trafford on Saturday in the aftermath of their shock defeat by Basle while big-spending City have also crashed out despite beating Bayern Munich. But McCarthy believes the two clubs will respond in a positive fashion after failing to qualify for the knockout stages. He said: "It may have an affect on the Premier League. It might make those two teams better still in the Premier League as opposed to having to play Champions League football. "I've seen and read all the bits and heard all the 'it's embarrassing playing on Thursday night' stuff. "You know what, I would have thought both managers would have said 'we can't do anything about it, let's win the Europa League and the Premier League'. "The more you dwell on it afterwards, there is nothing that can be done about it. "All they can do is try and win the next competition they are in and it might just make them stronger in the league."
