Gerardo Martino, the coach of Paraguay's national team, has taken himself out of consideration to succeed Marcelo Bielsa as coach of Chile's national team.
Martino, an Argentine, said Friday he had not been contacted but would see out his contract with Paraguay, which runs through next year's Copa America tournament in Argentina. Martino led Paraguay to the World Cup quarterfinals where the South Americans were beaten 1-0 by eventual champion Spain.
The election of Spanish businessman Jorge Segovia as the new president of Chile's football federation triggered Bielsa's resignation. Martino has been mentioned as a candidate along with Boca Juniors coach Claudio Borghi and former Spanish national team coach Luis Aragones.
