Martinez aims to build on draw

Latics, who have been in or around the Premier League relegation zone all season, overcame a 2-1 deficit and the dismissal of Charles N'Zogbia to draw with the title-chasing Gunners in midweek. Wigan are still just a point above the bottom three but, after four games unbeaten, Martinez feels luck is starting to turn. The Spaniard said: "In any team you need that character, that desire, that passion. There are moments during the game when you have to show that. "We had a moment against Arsenal, a goal down and with a man sent off, when we needed to see those ingredients. "I think we showed them and that gives us a great platform to allow the talent to shine, and that is very pleasing. "I am pleased we have been unbeaten in December. That is something that is a real achievement for a young squad. "Now is the time to kick on in the second half of the campaign. The next step is getting the results the performances deserve. "On too many occasions we have played really well but missed the bit of know-how to reflect that in the scoreline." N'Zogbia was sent off for headbutting Arsenal's Jack Wilshere during Wednesday's eventful encounter at the DW Stadium. That indiscretion robs Wigan of the services of one of their most creative players for the next three games, starting with Sunday's home clash against Newcastle. That could lead to speculation N'Zogbia might have played his last game for the club as Martinez has previously said they will not stand in his way if acceptable offers come in. N'Zogbia was close to joining Birmingham after the clubs agreed a fee last summer but the move collapsed over personal terms. No new bids have yet been made and Martinez, who completed the signing of former Deportivo La Coruna defender Adrian Lopez this morning, is keen to deflect any further transfer talk. Martinez said: "I understand there is going to be a lot of media speculation but from our point of view we want to finish the transfer window with a stronger squad and I am really happy with the players I have got. "The injury situation is going to dictate what we do in the market. "If James McCarthy, Victor Moses and Franco di Santo come back fit during this window, they are going to be the best signings we can make." Martinez believes he has already made a smart signing in Lopez, who has been training with Athletic for several weeks. The 23-year-old former Spain Under-21 international has exercised his right to move as a free agent after his contract at the Riazor expired at the end of last season. Deportivo have argued for their right to compensation due to the player's age but world governing body FIFA have given Wigan permission to sign him. Lopez, who made 39 first-team appearances for Deportivo, including La Liga and UEFA Cup games, could now go straight into Martinez's squad to face Newcastle. Martinez said of his countryman: "He has got very good experience for a young man and is someone who is desperate to play for Wigan Athletic. "He is a modern defender, very good on the ball and technically gifted. He reads the game really well. "He needs to settle in and adapt. Many aspects of the game he will need to adjust to but I am really excited to have a player with a fantastic personality and a great football education." Martinez has also given his backing to struggling striker Mauro Boselli. The Argentinian has scored just one Carling Cup goal since his £6million summer move from Estudiantes and has been linked with a move. Martinez said: "He is still adapting to the British game and our team and that is going to take a little bit of time. "There is going to be speculation because what he did in Argentina is going to make him a wanted man around Europe. "All I want is Mauro to focus on Sunday. "Mauro Boselli is a sensational goalscorer and we are going to try everything we can to allow him to be himself and enjoy his football at Wigan Athletic."
