Sao Paulo striker Luis Fabiano underwent surgery on a tendon near his knee and is likely to miss at least the first month of the Brazilian league.

Sao Paulo doctors say the operation on Friday night to repair the tendon was successful and that the former Sevilla striker will be reevaluated in a few weeks.

The 30-year-old Fabiano had been hurting since signing with Sao Paulo in March for ?7.6 million ($10.8 million). Team doctor Jose Sanchez said on the club's website that the thigh injury ''is not serious but is rare.''

The Brazilian league starts Saturday.
