Leverkusen coach handed three-match touchline ban

Published Feb. 24, 2016 5:56 a.m. ET

Bayer Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt has been banned from the touchline for the next three games following his refusal to accept a red card during Sunday's Bundesliga clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Schmidt, who was also fined 20,000 euros ($22,000), was hit with a five-game ban, with two suspended until 30 June 2017, the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed in a statement.

The DFB's sporting court found him guilty of "continued unsportsmanlike conduct" after he refused to leave his dugout in an extraordinary incident during Bayer's 1-0 defeat at the BayArena.

Schmidt was ordered to leave the dugout for his protests which followed Dortmund's goal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored on the break after referee Felix Zwayer waved away calls for a foul on Leverkusen's Stefan Kiessling.

Zwayer took the players off the pitch when Schmidt refused his red card and the game was halted for eight minutes before resuming without Schmidt in the dugout.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller was also fined 10,000 euros ($11,000) for his criticism of Zwayer after the match.

He said the decision to postpone the game had been "totally over the top".
