Klose breaks World Cup goal-scoring record in Germany rout over Brazil

Miroslav Klose set the new all-time World Cup scoring record with 16 goals on Tuesday, helping lead Germany to a stunning 7-1 win over Brazil in Belo Horizonte.

The 36-year-old Lazio striker was already Germany's all-time leading scorer after he scored in the group stages against Ghana, to better Gerd Muller's record. It was Klose's second goal of this World Cup. On Tuesday night, he scored Germany's second, putting in his own rebound in the 23rd minute to pass Braziliian Ronaldo in the Cup scoring tables.

Klose, Germany's leading goal-scorer with 71 goals in 136 games, is the only man to have played in four World Cups semifinals, having played in every tournament since 2002. The only record he is unlikely to best is the total appearance record for the Germans. With just the final left to play, and Klose on 23 games, he cannot catch countryman Lothar Mattheus' record of 25 appearances.

Klose also continued a remarkable streak: The Germans have never lost a game in which he has scored.

Klose won the World Cup Golden Boot in 2006 with five goals. Currently, James Rodriguez of Colombia is on pace to win the award, with six.
