Javier Clemente appointed new Cameroon coach
Former Spain coach Javier Clemente was named as the new manager of the Cameroon national team on Tuesday following a disastrous World Cup for the Indomitable Lions under Paul Le Guen.
The Cameroon football federation announced that Clemente, 60, had agreed a two-year contract to replace Le Guen - who resigned in June after leading Cameroon to three defeats and an early exit in South Africa.
A federation statement said Clemente would officially sign his contract in the Cameroon capital Yaounde no later than Sept. 28.
It was also confirmed that former Cameroon internationals Francois Omam Biyik and Jacques Songo'o will be part of Clemente's coaching team.
Biyik will be Clemente's assistant and Songo'o will be the goalkeeper coach, a role he fulfilled on a temporary basis at the World Cup.
Clemente coached Athletic Bilbao, the team he also played for, to successive Spanish league titles in 1983 and 1984 - the first of three spells in charge at Bilbao.
He was Spain manager from 1992 to 1998 and guided the country to a 31-game unbeaten run.
In a 15-year managerial career he has also coached the Serbian national team and, most recently, Real Valladolid where he replaced Onesimo Sanchez in April this year. Clemente was charged with rescuing Valladolid from relegation from Spain's top flight with just eight games of the season left - a feat he couldn't achieve.
Clemente's first test with Cameroon will be to qualify the four-time African champion for the 2012 African Cup of Nations.
Cameroon's next international is a qualifying game in Mauritius on Sept. 4. The Indomitable Lions are grouped with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Senegal and Mauritius in Cup of Nations qualifying.
