Two second-half goals gave Iraq a 2-0 away win over Singapore on Tuesday and its first points in third-round Asian qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

The Iraqis controlled play throughout the game, missing several close-range chances in the first half. Iraq kept the pressure on at the start of the second half and broke through in the 50th minute when striker Alaa Abdul-Zahra headed home.

Captain Younis Mahmoud sealed the visitor's win with a second goal in the 86th minute in front of 6,000 fans.

Iraq, coached by former Brazil great Zico, has three points after two games. Iraq suffered a disappointing 2-0 home loss against Jordan last Friday.

Zico had criticized the pitch at Jalan Besar Stadium before the match, saying he preferred natural grass to Singapore's artificial turf.

Singapore coach Radojko Avramovic watched the match from the stands, serving a one-game suspension for arguing with the referee during the team's 2-1 loss to China last week.

China visits Jordan later Tuesday in the other Group A game.
