Inter Milan's winless streak at Atalanta was extended to 5 1/2 years with a 1-1 draw on Tuesday in Serie A.

Ricardo Alvarez gave Inter the lead in the 16th minute with a shot from the edge of the box but German Denis equalized for the hosts with a header in the 25th.

Inter last won in Bergamo in April, 2008. Since then, the Nerazzurri have lost twice and drawn three times.

Still, the draw moved fourth-place Inter one point ahead of Fiorentina and within eight points of Serie A leader Roma.

Atalanta is eighth, 14 points back.

On Wednesday, second-place Napoli visits Fiorentina and two-time defending champion Juventus - which is level on points with Napoli - hosts Catania.

On Thursday, Roma hosts Chievo aiming to extend its record winning streak to open the season to 10 matches.

On a rainy night, Inter nearly conceded a goal nine minutes in following an error by goalkeeper Samir Handanovic but Fredy Guarin cleared the danger off the line.

Handanovic exited at halftime with an apparent injury and was replaced by Juan Pablo Carrizo.

In the 73rd, Mauro Icardi had a chance to restore Inter's lead but he hit the post.

Ten minutes later, Carrizo preserved the draw by saving a close-range effort from Mario Yepes.
