Hitzfeld opts for young Swiss squad vs. Bulgaria

Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has named a young and inexperienced squad for a 2012 European Championship qualifying match against Bulgaria.

Hitzfeld's 22-player roster includes three teenagers, and eight players who have played no more than two international matches. Backup goalkeeper Marco Woelfli, who turned 29 last week, is the oldest player.

Switzerland hosts Bulgaria at Basel on Sept. 6. Both currently trail group leaders England and Montenegro by six points and could be already eliminated depending on results in the Sept. 2 round of group fixtures.




Goalkeepers: Diego Benaglio (Wolfsburg), Marco Woelfli (Young Boys), Johnny Leoni (Zurich).

Defenders: Stephan Lichtsteiner (Juventus), Gaetano Berardi (Brescia), Johann Djourou (Arsenal), Philippe Senderos (Fulham), Heinz Barmettler (Zurich), Timm Klose (Nuremberg), Reto Ziegler (Juventus).

Midfielders: David Degen (Young Boys), Gokhan Inler (Napoli), Gelson Fernandes (Leicester), Blerim Dzemaili (Napoli), Pirmin Schwegler (Eintracht Frankfurt), Xherdan Shaqiri (FC Basel), Marco Padolino (Sampdoria).

Forwards: Eren Derdiyok (Bayer Leverkusen), Granit Xhaka (Basel), Innocent Emeghara (Grasshoppers), Admir Mehmedi (Zurich), Nassim Ben Khalifa (Young Boys).
