England goalkeeper Joe Hart was ruled out of the international friendly against France on Wednesday after hurting his back in training.

The Manchester City goalkeeper's place in the squad was taken by Watford's Scott Loach, who played for England's under-21 side in the 2-0 loss to Germany on Tuesday.

A statement released by England said Hart returned to City on Wednesday after sustaining his injury in a practice session the previous day.

With his first-choice goalkeeper missing, England coach Fabio Capello will have to decide if Ben Foster or Robert Green will replace Hart for the match at Wembley.

England has been plagued by injuries to key players ahead of the friendly, with striker Wayne Rooney, midfielder Frank Lampard and defenders Ashley Cole, John Terry and Glen Johnson the other regular members of Capello's starting team absent.

Capello said Tuesday that uncapped striker Andy Carroll would start against Les Bleus but it was widely reported Wednesday that Newcastle does not want its player to feature in case he aggravates a groin injury.
