Record-signing Asamoah Gyan marked his first Premier League start for Sunderland by scoring both goals to clinch a 2-0 victory over Stoke on Saturday.
Gyan, who joined for more than 13 million pounds (then $20 million) in August, put Sunderland ahead after nine minutes from close range and the Ghana striker added another in the 86th minute.
Steed Malbranque squandered a chance to extend the home side's lead in the 29th when his penalty was saved by Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.
Stoke was convinced it should have been awarded a penalty when Lee Cattermole appeared to keep out Kenwyne Jones' 71st-minute header with his arm.

Stoke also saw Ryan Shawcross sent off for a second bookable offense in the 83rd.
