Gunners boss goes on defensive

The Gunners arrived in China on Thursday in the final leg of their Asia tour following last night's comfortable 4-0 win over a Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur. Arsenal's rearguard was hardly tested in the Bukit Jalil Stadium, and is unlikely to face a stern examination from Chinese Super League side Hangzhou Greentown on Saturday. Despite leaking 43 goals as their Premier League title bid fell apart last season - 10 more than rivals Manchester City and Chelsea - Wenger insists major surgery is not needed ahead of the forthcoming campaign. "I don't think we are weak defensively, but we are an offensive team. Sometimes that exposes our defenders a bit more than other teams," said the Gunners boss, who has been linked with moves for both Bolton's Gary Cahill and Germany international Per Mertesacker, currently at Werder Bremen. "I believe we have quality defenders. One is Thomas Vermaelen and he did not play last year. "In open play, we were one of the better defences [last season], but we conceded too many goals on set-pieces and that is where we want to improve this season." Wenger has bolstered his backline with the £1million signing of youngster Carl Jenkinson, the former Charlton player making his debut at right-back on Wednesday night with a competent display. Arsenal's other summer arrival Gervinho did not travel to Asia, but Wenger is expecting big things when the £11m Ivory Coast forward integrates with the rest of the squad on their return to London. "He has qualities that are interesting," said Wenger. "He has good movement off the ball, he is very quick. He can play up front, on the left or on the right. "He can score goals, can provide and had the best assists in the French league last year. I think he can be a great contribution to the offensive efficiency of the team." Wenger added: "He has qualities like Theo Walcott, they have good movement. "I think Theo can play on the left, right and up front. He has a similar type of pace and finishing." Wenger revealed Arsenal players are using GPS vests during pre-season games to help monitor and improve fitness levels as they prepare for a crucial opening to the new campaign, which includes a Champions League play-off. Holland forward Robin van Persie believes hitting the ground running will be essential. He said on arsenal.com: "Hopefully a good pre-season can give us a good start because we need a good start. "Almost everyone has had a good break of at least a month. It's very important. We didn't have a World Cup or European Championships, so we will have good preparation. "We will have more than a month, I think five or six weeks, before the start of the season so we can prepare well."
