'Gladbach held at home by in-form Hamburg
Borussia Moenchengladbach failed to consolidate second place in the Bundesliga by allowing Hamburger SV to salvage a 1-1 draw Friday.
Tolgay Arslan's 56th-minute equalizer canceled out Mike Hanke's opening goal and preserved Hamburg's eight-game unbeaten run in away games.
Moenchengladbach hasn't lost in 14 games at home and is unbeaten in any competition for nine.
''We wanted to keep that,'' Borussia defender Tony Jantschke said.
Hanke scored in the 45th minute, with a glancing header from Juan Arango's clever free kick. However, replays showed the Moenchengladbach forward was offside when the ball was struck.
Bayern Munich can reclaim second place with a win over Schalke on Sunday, while Schalke can move level on points with Moenchengladbach. Borussia Dortmund leads the standings by two points.
Moenchengladbach started brightly, with Hamburg defender Dennis Diekmeier blocking Roel Brouwers' shot on the line and Arango flashing a shot wide, before Igor de Camargo missed a great chance.
Hamburg captain Heiko Westermann was harshly penalized for an apparent handball, and Arango capitalized by whipping the free kick in for Hanke to score.
Arslan shot over from close range after the break, but atoned in the 56th when he rifled the ball in from the six-yard box after a corner for his first ever Bundesliga goal.
''You can't plan everything that happens in a game - thankfully,'' Moenchengladbach coach Lucien Favre said.
