A second-division German player says depression drove him to an unsuccessful suicide attempt two months ago.

St. Pauli defender Andreas Biermann says in a statement he has been suffering from depression for years and tried to take his own life Oct. 20.

Biermann's revelation comes 10 days after the suicide of Germany and Hannover goalkeeper Robert Enke, who battled depression for six years.

Biermann does not disclose details of his suicide attempt but says he was making it public to encourage other disease victims to seek help. The player has been in a clinic since Nov. 13.
