Robin Dutt was appointed as sporting director by the German football federation on Wednesday to replace Matthias Sammer, who left this month for Bayern Munich.

Former Bayer Leverkusen and Freiburg coach Dutt agreed to a four-year contract, effective from next Wednesday.

Germany coach Joachim Loew welcomed his appointment, saying he was ''happy that the DFB handled it so well and found this competent solution so quickly. I'm looking forward to our work together.''

The 47-year-old Dutt will oversee the development of Germany's youth players and the training of the country's coaches.

Dutt said he was looking forward to an ''incredibly exciting challenge of developing the land's biggest talents in football.''

Sammer spent six years in the role before leaving for Bayern.

Dutt was fired as Leverkusen coach in April. He coached Freiburg for four seasons to 2011 and helped the club achieve promotion to the Bundesliga.
