The Scotland captain was making his first appearance for United this season when starting alongside Michael Carrick in midfield in the 1-1 Champions League draw in Lisbon. He missed almost two months at the end of last term due to a virus and was also left out of United's pre-season tour to the USA to continue his rehabilitation. Fletcher is now back to fitness and was pleased to be given the opportunity to face Benfica as Sir Alex Ferguson made a raft of changes to his team with an eye on Sunday's Premier League clash with Chelsea. However, with the Red Devils having made a blistering start to the defence of their title, Fletcher accepts it could be difficult to retain his spot for the Old Trafford encounter. "It's great to be back involved in the squad," Fletcher told Sky Sports. "I know the lads have been playing fantastically well at the beginning of the season, some great football and some fantastic results, so it is going to be difficult. "All you can do is do your best when you're given the opportunity and try and stay in the team. "The manager spoke about once the Champions League started the squad game would come into play and that was proved tonight. "He made six or seven changes, everyone who came in looked comfortable and there was an eye towards the big game on Sunday which makes competition for places good."
