Cyprus police say a teenager is recovering from burns to his head and shoulder after a firecracker went off in the stands during a Cyprus Cup football match between Apollonas Limassol and AEL Larnaca.
Police said in a statement Thursday that the 16-year-old boy was among five people hurt during the explosion a day earlier. Police said the teen's injuries were not life-threatening.
A 30-year-old man who underwent surgery to his right palm was arrested to assist investigators. Three others, aged 26, 32 and 23, were treated and released.
Many firecrackers have been thrown from the stands in recent matches. Police arrested at least nine people for football-related violence and vandalism before and after championship matches last weekend.
