FC Twente close in on Dutch title
Steve McClaren's troops had to wait until the 70th minute to break the deadlock against their well-organised opponents, Cheik Tiote taking the acclaim with his first goal for the club. Luuk de Jong made sure of the points with the second at the death as Twente extended their advantage to seven points with three games remaining. The gap will return to four points should second-placed Ajax defeat VVV Venlo tomorrow. NAC Breda are up to eighth place after Donny Gorter's 16th-minute penalty secured a 1-0 win at home to Roda JC, while Sparta Rotterdam moved two points clear of the relegation play-off zone with a 1-1 draw at home to Heracles Almelo. Heracles opened the scoring through Bas Dost after 47 minutes but Edouard Duplan made sure it finished honours even when he levelled five minutes later. The night's other game saw fifth-placed AZ Alkmaar held to a goalless stalemate at NEC Nijmegen. Last night's sole Eredivisie fixture saw rock-bottom RKC Waalwijk run out surprise 4-1 winners over Vitesse Arnhem.
