At least two fans have been stabbed and an ambulance attacked in clashes ahead of the Rome derby.

The ANSA news agency reports that an ambulance had to be abandoned after it was assailed by fireworks plus rocks and sticks being thrown.

After hearing of the news, Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno made an appeal for calm ahead of the match later Monday between Roma and Lazio.

There is a heavy police presence around the Stadio Olimpico and nearby stores closed early ahead of the night game.
