Luke Steele admitted that Barnsley chief executive Ben Mansford played a major role in keeping the goalkeeper at the Championship club.
The 28-year-old appeared to be on his way out of Oakwell after expressing his disappointment at being offered a one-year extension to his contract.
David Flitcroft, who took over as manager at the Yorkshire club in December 2012, was originally only prepared to offer Steele a new one-season deal.
But Mansford persuaded Flitcroft to double the period to two and Steele told the Barnsley Chronicle: "I had an offer early on and it was a straight 'no'.
"After that I said to my agent and family that I would look elsewhere if that was the best Barnsley could do.
"There were no mind games. I spoke to other clubs because I felt Barnsley weren't giving me anything to work with in terms of contract size.
"But once Ben came in things changed and the offer improved so I stayed.
"Deep down my family knew that I wanted to stay at Barnsley and I am relieved that it is all sorted and I'm excited for next season."
Steele first played for Barnsley in February 2008 and has since gone on to make more than 190 first team appearances.
The former Manchester United and England midfielder, 45, took the reins at Bloomfield Road in February on a one-year rolling contract and saw them to a 15th-placed finish in the Championship.
Sky sources claim that the former Blackburn Rovers boss, who replaced Michael Appleton in the Blackpool hotseat, has had the offer of resignation swiftly turned down by the Bloomfield Road hierarchy.
Following the news, Blackpool moved quickly to stress Ince remains in charge by using the club's official Twitter account to publish a photograph of him taking training.

The Egypt international, who helped Premier League newcomers City win promotion from the Championship while on a season-long loan, has signed a three-year contract after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.
And the 25-year-old winger is delighted to continue his working relationship with Steve Bruce, the Hull manager who brought him to England during his time in charge of Sunderland.
"I really enjoy playing for him and I look forward to doing so again now," Elmohamady told the Hull website. "It feels great to be here permanently, especially after what happened here last season.
"It was a great year and I thoroughly enjoyed playing for this club. Everything about it was great - the players, the staff, the fans - and I am delighted to be here again.
"It's going to be great to play in the Premier League again, especially with Hull City, and I am very much looking forward to the new season.
"Moving here was an easy decision to make. The fans are fantastic and it will be enjoyable to play in front of them in the Premier League."
Elmohamady, who first arrived on Wearside on loan in the summer of 2010, made 61 appearances for Sunderland.
