Elmander rescues 1-1 draw for Bolton vs. Wigan
Swedish striker Johan Elmander scored a second-half equalizer to earn Bolton a 1-1 draw at Wigan in the Premier League on Saturday.
After an uneventful first half, the game to life when Wigan took the lead in the 59th minute.
Franco di Santo looked marginally offside when he picked up Charles N'Zogbia's pass on the right but play was allowed to continue and Di Santo fed Hugo Rodallega, who coolly beat Bolton 'keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Bolton leveled seven minutes later when Wigan's defense failed to clear a cross and Elmander eventually toe-poked the loose ball home.
The result leaves Bolton unbeaten in five games, one better than Wigan, which has not lost in four but is only two points above the relegation zone.
Wigan may be more concerned about the health of midfielder James McCarthy, who was taken off on a stretcher with an apparently serious ankle injury following a tackle by Fabrice Muamba in the first half.
''He's gone to the hospital and we'll get the results over the next 24 hours but it doesn't look too good,'' Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said. ''It's a real shame because he's a very young man but he's very mature on the pitch and he's been performing in a very special manner.''
''When you look at the replay, (Muamba) clearly gets his ankle first. It's disappointing. The intent is to play the ball (but) it's from behind.''
Bolton manager Owen Coyle said he hoped McCarthy would be back in action soon.
''My thoughts are to make sure he's OK because I've known him as a young kid progressing all the way through in Scotland to where he is now, and there's no doubt he's destined for a glittering career,'' Coyle said.
''Hopefully he's back very soon. Certainly from my position it looked an innocuous challenge.
Bolton was enjoying the better of the first half even before McCarthy's injury caused a lengthy delay in play, but it struggled to create any clear-cut chances.
Wigan gradually worked its way into the game and N'Zogbia almost gave his side the lead when he bent a shot just past the post before Rodallega shot too close to Jaaskelainen.
Rodallega finished a slick move to give Wigan a lead which lasted only seven minutes before Elmander scored his fifth of the season.
Both sides had chances to win it, Wigan 'keeper Chris Kirkland saving from Rodrigo Moreno and Rodallega heading wastefully wide for Wigan.
''We went behind to a goal that was clearly two yards offside,'' Coyle said. ''I felt that in real time, I've seen it again and when Di Santo picks the ball up he's two yards offside. He's not even close
''We got a deserved equalizer and in the last part of the game both teams went all out to try to win the game.''
