Ecuador defeated Costa Rica 3-0 on Saturday to reach the knockout stage of the Under-20 World Cup.

Edson Montano found the net after just 82 seconds and Marlon De Jesus scored twice - in the 13th and 69th minutes.

The victory gave Ecuador four points in three matches and second place in Group C. Costa Rica has three points and advanced to the round-of-16 as one of the four best third-place teams. Spain topped the group, winning all of its matches.

Fans barely had a chance to sit down before Brayan De La Torre broke down the right side and took a shot, which keeper Mauricio Vargas kicked away, but into the path of Montano who chipped it home.

Ecuador added to the lead in the 13th minute when De Jesus headed in a corner. He scored his second in the 69th, taking a pass and slotting it home. De Jesus was deprived of a hat trick when his 80th-minute attempt was stopped by a sprawling save by Vargas.

Costa Rica's best chance in the first half came in the 39th when Jordan Smith was stopped at point-blank range by Ecuador keeper John Jaramillo. The rebound came to Joseph Mora who shot over the crossbar.

Costa Rica's Juan Golobio shot just inches wide in the 48th. He was stopped by Jaramillo two minutes later on a rising 30-meter (yard) strike.

Costa Rica had a few chances, but mounted little in the way of a consistent attack.

Play in the knockout round-of-16 is Tuesday and Wednesday with four matches each day.
