
Oleh Husev salvaged a 1-1 draw for 10-man Dynamo Kiev against Ajax in the first leg of their Champions League playoff on Tuesday.
Ajax took the lead in the 57th minute when Jan Vertonghen headed in a free kick after Dynamo's Denys Harmash had been sent off for a second yellow card.
Dynamo equalized in the 66th when Husev broke free through the middle and slotted home.
The match contained few other scoring chances for either side. The second leg is on Aug. 25 in Amsterdam.
Dynamo started strongest with plenty of possession and pressuring through Husev and Andriy Yarmolenko on the wings. But Ajax started to get into the game as the half went on.
Uruguay forward Luis Suarez broke through on goal in the 22nd minute after some neat interplay with Mounir El Hamdaoui, but his shot from a tight angle was just wide by 17-year-old debutant goalkeeper Maksym Koval.
Dynamo started to look nervous at the back when a weak back pass from Roman Yeremenko in the 38th minute was blocked by a lunging Koval as two Ajax attackers closed in.
The match swung toward Ajax with Harmash's sending off in the 56th minute after a second yellow for a rash diving tackle.
Vertonghen surged ahead of the defense and glanced a header inside the far post from the resulting free kick.
But Dynamo hit back in the 66th minute, when Husev latched onto a headed through ball and calmly slid the ball pass Stekelenburg.
Suarez had a chance in the 87th as he raced onto a through ball after Leandro Almeida had slipped, but poked his shot wide of the post. An unmarked Suarez had a shot easily saved by the Kovalagain in the 90th.
