Deportivo Quito, Bolivar both progress
Deportivo Quito and Bolivar of Bolivia earned victories on Tuesday to reach the knockout stage of the Copa Libertadores.
Deportivo Quito defeated Mexico's Guadalajara Chivas 5-0 in Group 7, and Bolivar downed Universidad Catolica 3-0 in Group 3.
Fourteen teams have now reached the knockout stage. The other two places will be decided on Thursday with Brazil clubs Santos and Internacional the favorites to advance.
Matias Alustiza scored four goals for Deportivo with the other coming from Fidel Martinez Tenorio. Alustiza scored in the 17th, 27th, 70th and 86th minutes. Martinez Tenorio chipped in with a header in the 64th.
In the day's other Group 7 match, Defensor Sporting of Uruguay defeated Velez Sarsfield of Argentina 3-1.
Velez had already qualified and finished with 12 points in six matches. Deportivo Quito finished with 10, Defensor nine and Guadalajara Chivas four. The top two teams in each group advance.
Andres Olivera gave Defensor Sporting the lead in the sixth minute. Diego Rodriguez made it 2-0 in the 37th and Matias Britos capped the Uruguay scoring in the 46th. Federico Insua broke through for Velez in the 63rd with a penalty.
In Group 3, Bolivar took a 1-0 lead in the second minute with a goal by Pablo Javier Frontini, followed by goals from Walter Flores in the 27th and Damian Lizio in the 49th.
In the other Group 3 match, Junior of Colombia defeated Universidad Espanola of Chile 2-1.
Universidad Espanola had already qualified and finished with 10 points. Bolivar improved to 10 points in second place followed by Junior with seven and Universidad Catolica with six.
Sherman Cardenas and Luis Alfonso Paez scored for Junior and Emiliano Vecchio got Universidad Espanola's lone goal.
Deportivo Quito and Bolivar are the 13th and 14th teams to reach the final 16.
The teams that had already advanced are: Lanus, Emelec, Universidad Espanola, Fluminense, Boca Juniors, Libertad, Vasco da Gama, Corinthians, Cruz Azul, Velez Sarsfield, Atletico Nacional and Universidad de Chile.
