Former Juventus great Alessandro Del Piero celebrated his 800th career match with a 58th-minute penalty before Brett Emerton added the winner 12 minutes later as Sydney FC beat the Perth Glory 2-1 in Australia's A-League on Sunday.
Travis Dodd had given the Glory a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute before 22,128 fans at the former Olympic stadium in Sydney. The win evened Sydney's record at 2-2 on the season.
Del Piero signed a two-year contract with Sydney in September. The other high-profile A-League acquisition this season, former Premier League striker and England international Emile Heskey, scored both Newcastle goals in the Jets' 2-1 win over the Melbourne Victory. It was Heskey's fourth goal in as many matches.
Elsewhere, Argentine attacker Jeronimo Neumann scored twice as Adelaide beat Wellington 3-1. Newcastle and Adelaide lead the league with three wins in four matches.
Striker Mark Bridge scored Western Sydney's first goal as the first-year Wanderers upset defending champions Brisbane. After missing an easy goal in last weekend's 1-0 derby loss to Sydney FC, Bridge headed in a shot 18 minutes into the first half.
On Sunday, a well-executed set-piece goal from Central Coast's Pedj Bojic gave the Mariners a 1-0 away win over the Melbourne Heart.
The 34-year-old Heskey's prolific start comes despite arriving in Australia only a week before the season started.
With a strike rate of one goal every 4.6 games in English football in his time with Leicester City, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wigan and Aston Villa, Heskey's main strength has been his ability to hold up the ball and create opportunities for his teammates.
But coach Gary van Egmond said before the season that Heskey could be a surprise in front of goal and he is pleased with the striker's performance.
''We have a lot of really really good lieutenants but he's the one who we need as the person who really leads that line,'' van Egmond said.
''He might not have as many touches as some players but his positioning and the way he attracts certain players, the other players are really benefiting from that.''
Heskey came off late due to a tight hamstring as a precaution.
The Phoenix said they will appeal the red card given to defender Ben Sigmund which led to cheating accusations against Adelaide United in Saturday's fiery match.
The Phoenix are furious at Sigmund being sent off for taking down Adelaide attacker Jeronimo Neumann when the Reds player appeared to have clearly dived.
Wellington captain Andrew Durante labeled Jeronimo a ''cheat'' after the match, and Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert said the league had a chance to send a message on players diving when examining Jeronimo's actions in the 77th minute.
''If the boy hasn't dived, then fine, we all move on, it happens from time to time,'' Herbert said. ''But if he has, then maybe there is a chance to make a bit of a statement here.''
