Summer signing Steven Defour steps up for Burnley

Burnley beat Watford 2-0 thanks to a pair of assists from their midfielder Steven Defour. The summer signing has been having a solid first season in the Premier League. He grabbed a goal against Hull City a few weeks ago, and has tallied three assists thus far.

Burnley had a number of the chances during the game. Their first goal came from Jeff Hendrick after a great corner was put into the box by Defour. Hendrick rose high to nod the ball down and past Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes. This gave Defour his second assist of the season, as well as Hendrick’s first goal of the year.

The second assist by Defour was nodded in by central defender Michael Keane. This gave his side the 2-0 lead that they held on to for the remainder of the match.

A solid display of goalkeeping from Burnley’s Tom Heaton kept Watford off the score sheet. His handful of saves combined with a good outing from the Burnley backline was enough for a clean sheet. It is Heaton’s second of the year..

Watford had been on a good run of form coming into this match in the league. They had just defeated Manchester United 3-1 the week before, with Troy Deeney grabbing a brace. The match before that, they came from behind to beat West Ham 4-2.

A mid-week loss to Gillingham in the EFL Cup may have killed their momentum. A 2-1 defeat after extra time was a rude awakening for the Watford supporters and players alike.

After their win, Burnley and Watford are currently tied on points with 7. Burnley will host a fiery Arsenal team on Sunday October 2nd, with kickoff set for 11:30am EST. Watford will host Bournemouth the day before, with scheduled kickoff at 10am EST.

Burnley will be hoping to continue their form, as they have a tough challenge ahead. Watford will hope to forget this loss and move on swiftly towards a good result.
