Corinthians pull further ahead in Brazil with 3-1 victory

SAO PAULO (AP) Corinthians increased their lead atop Brazil's first division with a 3-1 victory Sunday at Figueirense. The win, coupled with second-place Atletico-MG's 2-2 draw at Joinville, gave the Sao Paulo club a seven-point margin through 28 rounds.

Gil, Elias and Renato Augusto scored for Corinthians, and Leonardo Silva got the only goal for Figueirense.

Before only 7,500 at Joinville, Thiago Ribeiro and Luan scored for Atletico-MG, with William Popp and Kempes getting the goals for Joinville.

Gremio, nine points off the leaders, won at home 3-1 on Saturday against Avai. Giuliano scored twice and Argentine Maxi Rodriguez had the other.

In Saturday's other match, Fluminense defeated Goias 2-0, with Fred and Gustavo Scarpa scoring.

In other results on Sunday: Santos 3, Inter 1; Atletico-PR 1, Ponte 2; Sao Paulo 1, Palmeiras 1; Flamengo 1, Vasco 2; Cruzeiro 2, Coritiba 0; Sports 3, Chapecoense 0.

In the Flamengo-Vasco derby at Rio's Maracana, Nene and Rodrigo scored for Vasco, with Emerson getting Flamengo's only goal. The match was played before about 40,000 fans.

In the Sao Paulo-Palmeiras derby, Carlinhos scored for Sao Paulo and Robinho had the only strike for Palmeiras.

Ricardo Oliveira of Santos, who was called up the national team last week for World Cup qualifiers next month against Chile and Venezuela, leads all scorers with 17 league goals.

Jadson of Corinthians has 11, Lucas Pratto of Atletico-MG has 10, followed by Alexandre Pato of Sao Paulo with nine.
