Paraguay's Libertad recovered from conceding an early goal to beat Peru's Universidad San Martin 5-1 on Tuesday in the Copa Libertadores group stage.

German Alemanno gave visitors Universidad the lead in the fifth minute, but goals from Rodrigo Rojas, Angel Oroue and Manuel Maciel before the break and further strikes from Victor Ayala and Omar Pouso in the second half gave Libertad a comfortable win.

Also Tuesday, Mexico's Chiapas won 2-1 at home against Ecuador's Emelec, with goals from Francisco Torres and Antonio Salazar. Cristian Menendez scored for Emelec.

In Asuncion, Alemanno finished from close range to give Universidad the lead against Libertad, but after that things quickly fell apart for the Peruvian club.

Rodrigo Rojas equalized from the edge of the area in the 14th and Angel Oroue put Libertad ahead four minutes later, before Manuel Maciel's deflected effort in the 28th gave the home side a two-goal lead at half time.

After the break, Victor Ayala arrived at the back post to plant a 50th-minute downward header into the net and Pouso got the fifth with a header following a short corner in the 85th.

The win put Libertad atop Group 1 with seven points, ahead of Universidad by a point after three games. Colombia's Once Caldas has two points and San Luis of Mexico has one in the same section.

Elsewhere, Francisco Torres scored a 44th-minute penalty and Antonio Salazar added a second in the 67th in Chiapas' 2-1 win against Emelec. Menendez pulled a goal back in the 70th for Emelec.

The result put Chiapas atop Group 6 with seven points from three games, while Emelec stayed on four from three. In the same group, defending Libertadores champion Internacional of Brazil has four points from two games and Bolivia's Jorge Wilstermann has zero from two.

Group fixtures continue Wednesday and Thursday.

The Copa Libertadores is Latin America's top international club competition. The final is scheduled for June.

The winner of the Libertadores goes to the Club World Cup to be played in Japan in December against the other continental champions.
