Sampdoria says Ciro Ferrara will be its new coach and that the former Juventus boss will sign in the next few days.
Ferrara is set to replace Giuseppe Iachini, who had hoped to keep the job after leading the club to promotion at the first attempt.
The 45-year-old Ferrara was fired by Juventus in January 2010 after less than a season in charge following a string of poor results.
Sampdoria was given permission to approach Ferrara by the Italian football federation as he was Italy's under-21 coach.
Iachini took charge in November with Sampdoria floundering in mid table. He turned things around, leading the team into the playoffs and to victory in the final against Varese.
Iachini's contract was automatically renewed for a season by the promotion.
