Chelsea left 'embarrassed' by fans
Chelsea issued a statement Sunday condemning its fans for not honoring the moment's silence before its FA Cup semifinal victory against Tottenham.
Before the game at London's Wembley Stadium, fans and players alike were asked to observe a moment's silence in memory of the Hillsborough disaster and also for Italian player Piermario Morosini, who collapsed on the field Saturday and died after a cardiac arrest.
A small section of fans at the Chelsea end did not honor the silence, Sky Sports reported.
"Chelsea Football Club is extremely disappointed that a very small minority of fans embarrassed the club today by not honoring the moment's silence before kick-off," the team statement said.
"Chelsea FC believes all moments of respect should be honored and today we pay our full respects to all those that suffered as a result of the Hillsborough disaster 23 years ago."
It is understood Chelsea will work with Wembley and the Football Association to try to identify the fans responsible.
Ninety-six Liverpool fans died and another 766 were injured in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster amid a human crush that resulted from overcrowding in the terraces at the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, England, during an FA Cup tie with Nottingham Forest.
