English Football Association chief executive Ian Watmore has quit after just nine months on the job and less than three months ahead of the World Cup.
FA chairman David Triesman said Monday tried to persuade Watmore to stay. Watmore's predecessor, Brian Barwick, quit in August 2008 after disagreements with Triesman over the scope of his role but stayed until the end of that year.
Triesman and the rest of the FA board will meet Tuesday to discuss Watmore's departure and the search for his successor.
Watmore's main achievement was reviving plans for a permanent training base for the national team to emulate France's Clairefontaine complex - eight years after it was first announced.
