Brian Laws was appointed manager of Premier League side Burnley on Wednesday - a month after being fired by a second-tier club.

The 48-year-old former Burnley defender signed a 2 1/2-year contract to replace Owen Coyle, who quit last week to take over at neighbor Bolton.

"We believe Brian will deliver a continuity of the culture to which Burnley fans and staff have become accustomed," Burnley said in a statement. "As a former Burnley defender, he is especially familiar with the club, the traditions we have and the passion we all share."

The priority for Laws, who was fired last month by Championship club Sheffield Wednesday, will be keeping Burnley in the Premier League.

Burnley, which is back in the top flight for the first time since 1976, is 14th with 20 points from 20 games.
