Bayer Leverkusen says Renato Augusto faces an injury layoff as the Brazil midfielder needs an operation to cure a long-standing knee problem.
The Bundesliga side said in a statement Monday that Renato Augusto will undergo an operation by Brazil team doctor Jose Luiz Runco in Rio de Janeiro during the week.
The 23-year-old midfielder will return to Leverkusen to complete his rehabilitation.
The club did not say when the player would be able to return to action.
Bayer managing director Wolfgang Holzhaeuser recently criticized Renato Augusto as an ''alibi footballer'' following some poor performances.
