France coach Laurent Blanc observed a moment's silence on Saturday for veteran French television commentator Thierry Roland, who has died at the age of 74.

French reports say Roland died of a stroke in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Blanc and the team's press officer stood in silence for a few seconds before France's scheduled news conference.

Roland covered 13 World Cups and nine European Championships but was too ill to attend Euro 2012.

Blanc said ''on behalf of the French team, the staff and the players, we would like to offer our condolences to Thierry's family.''

French football league president Frederic Thiriez, who spoke with Roland after France's 2-0 win against Ukraine on Friday night, added that ''Thierry's passing causes me great pain.''
