Bin Hammam set to challenge Blatter as FIFA head

The head of Asia's soccer federation is set to end months of speculation Friday by announcing he will challenge Sepp Blatter for the FIFA presidency.

Mohamed bin Hammam of Qatar has called a news conference at his Kuala Lumpur headquarters. He would be meeting an April 1 deadline to declare himself a candidate.

Bin Hammam has long held ambitions to lead soccer's international body. FIFA has had just eight presidents, all with European roots, in its 111-year history.

Blatter has run FIFA for 13 years. Bin Hammam's expected challenge gained momentum in December when FIFA chose Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup.
