LISBON, Portugal (AP) Benfica routed Estoril 4-0 with a late flurry of goals to start its defense of the Portuguese league title and give new coach Rui Vitoria a winning home debut on Sunday.
Striker Konstantinos Mitroglou, who joined Benfica on loan from English club Fulham last week, broke through in the 74th minute by heading in a cross from Nicolas Gaitan.
Jonas got his first of two goals four minutes later when he converted a penalty after Mattheus handled the ball in the area. The Brazilian forward struck again in the 81st before Nelson Semedo polished off the win in the 89th.
Vitoria left Guimaraes this summer to replace former manager Jorge Jesus after the coach stunned Benfica's fans by taking over at city rival Sporting Lisbon.
''The key to the match was the quality of this team in the second half,'' Vitoria said. ''Mitroglou's goal opened up the game and made everything easier.''
Sporting and FC Porto both won their opening matches earlier this weekend.
Elsewhere on Sunday, promoted club Uniao Madeira had a winning return to the topflight by beating Maritimo 2-1 in an island derby.
Braga, meanwhile, erased an early goal by Nacional to get a 2-1 win after Joan Roman scored the decisive goal with 11 to play.
Boavista also got late goals from Afonso Figueiredo and Luisinho to fight back for a 2-2 draw at Setubal, while Arouca won 2-0 at Moreirense from second-half strikes by Nuno Coelho and Maurides.
