Barcelona has named former player and coach Johan Cruyff as an honorary president.

Cruyff played for Barcelona from 1973-78 and coached the club from 1988-96, leading the team to its first European Cup title in 1992. The 62-year-old Dutchman is an adviser to Barcelona president Joan Laporta and also coaches Catalonia.

Laporta says Cruyff was deserving because of his achievements as "a player, a coach and because he is the creator of Barca's style of play."

Cruyff called the merit "an honor."

The three-time player of the year and former Netherlands international embodied the "total football" style of play that helped Ajax win three European Cups.
